Match Commentary
- 0': Evening all and welcome to live text commentary of the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg clash between Bayern Munich and Lyon at the Allianz Arena.
- 0': So Lyon are here on the back of a 3-2 aggregate victory over fellow French side Bordeaux in the quarter-finals. They also beat the mighty Real Madrid in the last-16.
- 0': Bayern earned their place here after beating Manchester United on away goals - Arjen Robben scored a stunner at Old Trafford and that turned out to be the decisive goal. They also engineered an away goals win over Fiorentina in the last-16, Robben was again the hero on that occasion.
- 0': Well the teams are in...
- 0': Bayern: Butt, Lahm, Van Buyten, Demichelis, Contento, Robben, Schweinsteiger, Pranjic, Ribery, Muller, Olic. Subs: Rensing, Altintop, Gorlitz, Klose, Alaba, Gomez, Tymoschuk.
- 0': Lyon: Lloris, Reveillere, Cris, Toulalan, Cissokho, Gonalons, Kallstrom, Ederson, Pjanic, Delgado, Lopez. Subs: Vercoutre, Michel Bastos, Govou, Makoun, Gomis, Anderson, Gassama.
- 0': Not too many surprises for either team, Lyon will obviously be keeping their eyes heavily on Ribery and Robben, with the lattter particularly sparkling in the Champions League this season.
- 0': Pjanic and Lopez will be spearheading the Lyon charge - Lopez is the French side's top scorer this season with 16 goals in all competitions, three of which have come in the Champions League.
- 0': Domestically, Bayern have moved to the top of the Bundesliga in recent weeks after watching Bayer Leverkusen lead the way for much of the season. They are now in pole position to win the title for the first time in four years.
- 0': After seven years of Ligue 1 success, Bordeaux usurped Lyon as champions last season and Claude Puel's side will almost certainly not be regaining their title this time around - with table-toppers Marseille nine points clear of Claude Puel's third place side.
- 0': Seven of Lyon's players are on yellow cards and remember they've had a long coach journey to get to Munich because of the old ash cloud - I'd say my money's on Bayern.
- 0': The players are out on the pitch at the Allianz Arena and the atmosphere is electric in Munich - this is the first time Bayern fans have witnessed a Champions League semi-final since they faced Real Madrid in 2001- when Uli Hoeness's side then went on to lift the trophy.
- 0': For Lyon, on the other hand, this is a first ever Champions League semi. The nerves must be jangling.
- 0': We're off...
- 0': It's Bayern who get things under way as the ball immediately soars towards Robben - but it's overhit.
- 1': Ribery and Olic combining really well down the left side and Bayern building the attack.
- 2': Lyon chasing shadows a little in the opening minutes, it's Bayern who have been keeping possession well.
- 3': Cissokho launches it long with a throw-in and Lyon finally keep hold of the ball. n
- 3': After a short spell in possession Bayern have it back and it's at the feet of Van Buyten.
- 4': Van Buyten brings down Delgado about 40 yards out and it's a free-kick.
- 5': How they'd love Juninho to step up to this one. It's Pjanic who hits it and it's pinballed around in the area before Gonalons is penalised.
- 5': Now it's a Bayern free-kick down the right, with Robben eyeing it up.
- 6': He swings it in low and it's rebounded out to Lopez. He lays it off to Kallstrom who advances down the left.
- 6': Toulalan brings down Robben but it's given away from the resulting free-kick.
- 7': Olic this time on the wrong end of a challenge from Reveillere but the ref waves away the protests.
- 8': He played the ball but he's definitely followed through on Olic - he's a lucky boy.
- 9': Schweinsteiger gives away the free-kick against Kallstrom and Pjanic will step up to it again. It's about 35 yards out.
- 9': Demichelis heads it away from Butt - there should have been a shout from the goalkeeper there. Lyon corner.
- 10': My mistake, their must ahve been a final touch off a Lyon shirt. Goal-kick it is.
- 10': Ribery accelerates down the left but he can't quite get on the end of the through-ball.
- 10': Ten minutes gone and it's been fairly even so far - there hasn't been a great pace to the game though.
- 11': Pranjic is felled and Bayern have a free-kick.
- 11': Ribery's delivery is poor but the ball comes back in the area. It's a wild effort from Van Buyten who volleys into the sky.
- 12': Robben on the gallup down the left - he lays it off to Muller whose cross is deflected out.
- 12': Ribery's corner nearly goes in but Lloris palms it away.
- 12': What a miss!
- 13': Schweinsteiger had an easy header after Lloris came but failed to collect the corner. The goal was gaping but the midfielder headed wide.
- 13': First real chance of the game, a let off for Lyon I feel.
- 14': Bayern beginning to get into their stride now. But Ederson comes away with the ball down the right wing for Lyon.
- 14': Solid defending from Contento and Bayern back on the attack.
- 15': Schweinsteiger releases Lahm down the right and he combines well with Robben.
- 15': The ball goes on towards Muller and he improvises well with a header despite facing away from goal. It would have been a miracle if he'd scored that!
- 16': Reveillere breaks down the right and overlaps well - his ball in the box was beyond Lisandro Lopez though.
- 17': Fantastic run from Ribery - a wonderfully penatrative run and Cris let him wander through before he fired a shot wide of the left hand post. The Frenchman starting to look dangerous.
- 18': Contento getting forward well from left-back but the move breaks down.
- 19': This time Olic has a great opportunity - he tries to side-foot it in but he's blazed it well over and wide from about eight yards. Poor.
- 20': I'm not sure if it was the long journey but Lyon look lacklustre - they keep giving the ball away.
- 21': Pjanic emerges through the middle and the ball breaks through to Lloris off Cris but it was indecisive from the goalkeeper and it was a poor clearance.
- 22': Ribery lays it off to Muller on th edge of the area but he's driven it over - Bayern really don't have their shooting boots on.
- 22': Muller clashed with Toulalan after that effort and he's been down injured for a little while now.
- 23': Sorry, that was actually Cris who got floored. He's back on now though.
- 23': Lyon win the free-kick - Van Buyten pushed Lisandro Lopez to the ground.
- 24': But it's poorly worked again.
- 25': Bayern have lost four games in this season's competition - even more impressive that they've managed to get to the semis.
- 26': Another free-kick for Lyon, Prjanic brings down Gonalons - it was a little theatrical though.
- 27': Yellow card for Prjanic and he will miss the second leg - though Van Bommel will be back for that one.
- 27': Delivery comes in and it's defended away for a Lyon corner.
- 28': The corner was overhit and soon after Lahm gives a tough back pass to deal with.
- 29': It's another Lyon corner now and Delagdo gets the header in at the near post. it comes out to Ederson who smashes it goalwards. But it's deflected away for ANOTHER corner.
- 30': Pjanic's cross is met by Lopez but it's headed wide.
- 30': Robben goes down like a sack of spuds and the assistant has waved away his claims for a free-kick in the corner.
- 31': Robben has twice lost in the Champions League semi-finals, both as a Chelsea player and both against Liverpool.
- 32': Every time Lyon get the ball they seem to give it away to Bayern. It has been a bit of a dire semi thus far.
- 32': Pjanic searches for Lisandro but it's comfortably dealt with by Van Buyten.
- 33': Bayern keeping possession now and Ribery shows some silky skills to waltz past two men before offloading it.
- 34': Robben and Lahm exchange passes down the right but Lahm's cross is blocked by Cissokho.
- 34': Bayern corner now after Cris played it away.
- 34': And another bite of the cherry for Ribery - but it's another poor ball.
- 35': Foul against Ribery - the referee seemed to believe he had been fairly dispossessed but he called it a few seconds later.
- 36': RED CARD!
- 36': It was Ribery - directly over the ball right on Lopez's ankle, right in front of the ref who made his mind up immediately.
- 37': So Ribery is off! Unbelievable but actually fully deserved.
- 38': And surely this should be an incentive for Lyon to try and string an attack together. Please.
- 39': Ribery will almost certainly get a two game ban, meaning he will miss both the semi-final second leg and final shoudl Bayern get there.
- 40': Robben attacks down the right and he's had a little shove at Cissokho. The ref tries to calm him down but the Dutchman looks irate.
- 41': Boos are ringing around the Allianz Arena as Reveillere tries to bring Lyon forward.
- 42': But it's Bayern who attack again with Lahm, who switches the ball to the left.
- 43': But the move breaks down and Lyon have the ball.
- 43': Kallstrom unleashes one from distance and forces Butt into a great save from his left-foot strike.
- 43': The more I watch replays of the Ribery red card the more I agree with the ref - it was a poor poor challenge.
- 44': Reveillere comes down the right again but his cross is deflected off Contento into the grateful grasp of Butt.
- 45': Bayern's ten men certainly not sitting back at the moment but they could be mroe vulnerable to counter attacks.
- 45': Lisandro shoots from distance this time but it's blocked. Demichelis looks to be struggling for Bayern and Tymoschuk is warming up.
- 45': HALF-TIME. Bayern 0-0 Lyon. Olic and Schweinsteiger missed chances early in the half but it's still goalless. Lyon have a great chance to capitalise in the second half after Ribery's deserved red card for a terrible tackle on Lopez, but Claude Puel's side must up their game as they have been poor. Grab yourself a cup of tea and I will see you again in 15.
- 46': And we're off for the second-half...
- 46': Bayern sub: Tymoschuk on for Olic
- 46': A defensive substitution which is to be expected from Van Gaal as he looks to tighten things up.
- 47': Bayern looking brightest early on after a good exchange between Muller and Schweinsteiger.
- 47': Free-kick for Bayern down the left but Robben's delivery is not met by anyone.
- 47': Lahm comes down the right and Bayern managing to keep possession well.
- 48': Speculative effort from Pranjic from distance and Lloris palms it out - poor handling more than anything though.
- 49': Long ball forward from Lahm cleared up by an excellent defensive header by Cris.
- 49': Lopez comes forward for Lyon and plays in Cissokho down the left. It could have been a better cross - straight into the hands of Butt.
- 50': Now Lyon keeping the ball and Cissokho for the first time in the match has been looking to overlap down the left.
- 50': Robben taken out cynically by Toulalan - who has been booked and will now miss the second leg.
- 51': Muller uses his strength to escape the clutches of Toulalan but can't manufacture a shot.
- 52': Robben delivers a cross into Schweinsteiger and the Germany midfielder heads it wide from a difficult angle.
- 52': Great chance again for Bayern - Lahm advanced down the right ahead of Cissokho and pulled it back for Muller who mishit.
- 53': RED CARD!
- 53': Toulalan has been given his marching orders for a late tackle on Schweinsteiger.
- 53': A second yellow in about four minutes and he looks furious with the decision. Schweinsteiger's reaction was key to that dismissal.
- 54': Lyon sub: Makoun on for Pjanic.
- 55': So Lyon have really thrown away their advantage now, and Cris is down on the floor after taking an awkward tumble.
- 56': The medics are on and it is the second time he's needed assistance in this match. Gonalons has moved to centre back now - they have no other fit central defenders on the bench.
- 57': Gomez now warming up for Bayern as the dynamics of the match have changed dramatically.
- 57': Lloris out to the feet of the onrushing Schweinsteiger.
- 58': Cris is back on but he looks in a bad way- he's limping badly.
- 59': Kallstrom hauls down Robben and Bayern spread the ball left from the intial free-kick on the right wing.
- 59': Lopez chasing down a long ball forward and he's battled really hard on his own up front with Demichelis and Van Buyten tracking him.
- 60': Lyon giving the balla way for fun here and Robben tiptoes through the defence.
- 60': He engineers some space but he's pulled his shot wide.
- 62': Lahm with loads of space down the right, he puts the ball in and Lloris is down bravely at the feet of Muller. Bayern have a corner though.
- 62': Lyon head it clear.
- 62': Bayern sub: Gomez on for Pranjic
- 62': An attacking sub by Van Gaal to add to Bayern's forward options.
- 63': Bayern definitely still the dominant team with Robben, 16 goals in his last 18 games, looking the most likely to unlock Lyon's defence.
- 65': Twinkletoed Robben still looking good and Muller's just had a shot tipped wide.
- 66': Corner for Bayern but yet again the ball into the box is just not good enough and Lyon are able to easily clear their lines.
- 66': Bastos preparing to come on for Lyon
- 67': Robben with stunning control after a ball forward from Demichelis - he turns the Lyon defence inside out before producing a perfect looking cross gor Gomez.
- 67': How has he missed it! Gomez has headed it tamely towards Lloris - but he was completely unmarked. The ball just seemed to ahng in the air.
- 68': GOAL! Robben
- 69': Bayern Munich 1-0 Lyon. He's done it again. He picked the ball up from 30 yards and hammered it goalwards. The ball took a deflection off Muller's head which took it past Lloris.
- 70': It may have come off Muller but Robben will definitely be claiming it.
- 70': Now Lyon look like they are actively trying to step it up with Cissokho.
- 71': But Bayern, too, looking to press home their advantage.
- 71': Robben was down the right again but Cissokho produced a great tackle just inside the box to take it off the Dutchman.
- 72': Schweinsteiger down the left and he and Contento interchange passes.
- 73': Bayern looking comfortable and are spreading it well. Robben down the right looks to pick out Muller - but the striker is tumbled over by Cris, who has done enough to put it out for a corner.
- 74': Gomez had another great chance to head in from Robben's corner - he's got the height but his heading ability appears to have little to be desired.
- 75': Robben shoots from 25 yards out again, but this time it rolls easily into Lloris's arms.
- 75': Bayern are all over Lyon - it's been an embarassing performance from the French semi-finalists.
- 76': I hate to sound like a broken record, but Bayern continue to press, with Schweinsteiger and Robben seeing plenty of the ball.
- 77': Even Demichelis and Van Buyten are wandering forward. That's how much space there is!
- 78': Lyon sub: Govou on for Delgado (who has just been useless!)
- 79': Late challenge by Bastos (who came on for Ederson in the 70th minute - sorry about that), and he's been booked for his troubles.
- 80': Kallstrom searches over the top for Govou and it's a good ball but the striker is offside.
- 80': Lopez has probably done the most running for Lyon but he's looking a bit like a headless chicken.
- 81': Lahm works some space after exchanging passes with Robben - they have looked a constant threat down the right - but his shot is deflected high into the air and out of play.
- 82': Robben goes down but his appeals are waved away.
- 83': Robben engineers some space again after a through ball from Gomez. The Dutchman shoots from the edge of the box but Lloris does well to save it.
- 84': It's palmed out towards Gomez but the striker is offside.
- 85': Bayern sub: Altintop on for Robben.
- 86': Robben looked irate after being subbed and Van Gaal had to calm him down.
- 86': Cissokho and Bastos combine down the left for Lyon but Lisandro gives the ball away after getting hold of the ball in the middle of the park.
- 87': Makoun fouls Contento and Bayern have a free-kick.
- 88': Van Gaal's side happy to knock it around.
- 88': Kallstrom picks it up for Lyon in midfield and he tries to play Lopez in down the left wing, but Van Buyten is strong ind efence and clears it away.
- 88': Govou has Lyon's best attempt of the match. He cuts inside from the right wing, onto his left foot and fires low, inches wide of Butt's goal.
- 90': Three minutes of stoppage time now and it's all fizzled out a little bit in Munich.
- 91': High foot from Altintop and Lyon have a free-kick.
- 92': Lahm again darting down the right - he has been magnificent tonight.
- 92': His cross is into a dangerous area but Cris knocks it to safety.
- 93': FULL-TIME. Bayern Munich 1-0 Lyon. It hasn't been a great game by any means but Robben has sparkled and it was his deflected long-range effort which separates the two teams at the end of the first leg. Even with ten against 11, Van Gaal's side were the better but when Toulalan got his marching orders that was it for Lyon. The French side must do significanly better if they are to have any chance of going through next week.
- 93': Thanks for joining us folks, see you again next time.
